March 16, 2001 IditaShageluk Update!

This is not the end of our interviews so please stay tuned for a few more next week!

IditaShageluk Updates brought to you by the

students of the Innoko River School

Something really exciting happened today in school! Joy surprised us with $500 in one dollar bills. When Linwood got to Anvik he won a big dinner and a $3000 award. He donated some of the money he won to the three schools: Shageluk, Anvik, and Grayling. He wants us to buy reading material for our classrooms. How nice is that! Many big thank you's Mr. Fiedler!

Devin and Leroy's Interview
of the IditaReaders
Leroy and Devin interviewed Tiffany and Stephanie in the Middle School about IditaReading. They told us IditaReading is about racing other classmates on reading books. There is a big map of the Iditarod trail in our school hallway! IditaReaders follow the same route as the Iditarod. They have to read 20 pages to get to another checkpoint! They have no limit to read each day. They can read as much as they want to read. It took them five days on the trail from Anchorage to Nome by reading books. They started reading a week ago. They enjoyed reading for the Iditareading competition.

The IditaRead Race to Nome!

IditaRead Finish Line!

We want everyone to know how much local village people volunteer and help out with the race. This race has a huge impact on everyone in our village communities along the trail. Without local village people's volunteering the race would not be possible.

The Iditarod Sled Dog Race is probably the largest mass arrival of outside people that most of our small communities ever see.

Everything from breaking the 60 miles of trail between Iditarod and Shageluk to hauling all the bags of dog food and hay by snow machine from our runway are done by local village residents and their kids!
