• Many people think that MLK Day is just about African-Americans. The truth is MLK Day is a recognition of the work that was done by civil rights leaders who opposed oppression and segregation in the United States.
  • During the 1960s Native Americans, Women and Blacks pressed the United States government to honor the Constitution of the United States, that all men are created equal.
  • In Alaska this was also the time of great change for Native Alaskans. With the United State's push for the creation of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, Native Alaskans demanded that legislation be written to protect what was left of Native land in Alaska.
  • The Alaska Native Land Claims Act was written ensuring Alaska Natives title to their land and guaranteed the continuation of traditional lifestyles. So much more land and culture would have been lost had it not been for hard-working leaders that stood up against oppression and assimilation.
  • Dr. Martin Luther King, JR.'s "dream" was that the promise for equality and human rights be extended to all.
